CVS annual Team Distance Challenge sees 1,043 colleagues travel 288,114 kilometres globally

6th Jun, 2025

CVS annual Team Distance Challenge has this year seen 1,043 colleagues compete in the UK and Australia to travel a total weighted distance of 288,114 kilometres, which is over seven times round the earth.

Two-hundred-and-twenty-two teams competed against each other over the course of May to see who could go the furthest over the month. It was open to all CVS colleagues in both countries at any fitness level. Teams were interdepartmental or from and across local regions.

The core activities included walking, running, swimming, cycling and rowing. Each discipline was weighted to give an overall score, for example, 1km of running will be worth more points than 1km of cycling. Teams either picked one activity or did all five.

Colleagues registered their distance and tracked progress live on a virtual map on a new Big Team Challenge app. Set up by CVS this year, it was designed to synch with most wrist-worn fitness trackers.

Prizes were awarded to winning teams, for distances covered and for each of the challenges held. An associated photography competition was also run where teams had to collect photos of buildings or objects whilst they were out exercising - including trig points, waterfalls and churches.

Ian Bellis, organiser and Clinical Director of CVS’ Equicall service, said:

Our Team Distance Challenge is a great way to get outdoors, get some exercise, and enjoy the company of friends and colleagues.

“We know exercise is an important aspect of maintaining good mental health. Studies show regular exercise reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety and improves overall cognitive function, plus, being outdoors in nature has a positive impact on mental wellbeing. So this makes our event hugely beneficial for all of our participants.”
